He was probably apprenticed to a local painter, Antonio di Giovanni d'Anghiari, and worked in Florence, Rimini, Urbino, Arezzo and Rome, for patrons including Sigismondo Malatesta and Federico da Montefeltro. His paintings are calm and geometric, with carefully constructed perspective; he also wrote treatises on perspective and geometry. He is known for the History of the True Cross frescoes in Arezzo, The Baptism of Christ and the Flagellation of Christ.
