Renoir built this canvas from short, quick strokes of colour straight from the tube. He painted the leisure and social life of Paris and its riverside suburbs, most famously in Bal du Moulin de la Galette (1876), now in the Musée d'Orsay, and Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880–81), now in The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; he later turned to warmer, more classical nudes and figure studies.
