Signed at lower right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAccording to his friend Georges Rivière, Renoir painted it in the autumn of 1876, after completing the Ball at the Moulin de la Galette, outside the house he rented on rue Cortot in Montmartre, with Nini and other regulars of the Moulin as models; Rivière himself appears to have posed for the young man in front. The title comes from the 1896 sale of its first owner, the composer Emmanuel Chabrier. He painted the leisure and social life of Paris and its riverside suburbs, most famously in Bal du Moulin de la Galette (1876), now in the Musée d'Orsay, and Luncheon of the Boating Party (1880–81), now in The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; he later turned to warmer, more classical nudes and figure studies.
