The upper head is soft blue, each flower with a pale yellow centre, and the lower, larger head is a deep plum-purple, its flat flowers ringed with bright yellow around a pale eye. The thick, fleshy stalks and smooth spoon-shaped leaves curl outward, and the plant is cut straight across at its base on the cream paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) was a botanical painter, born in Saint-Hubert in present-day Belgium, who worked in Paris. The botanist Charles-Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle taught him to dissect and draw plants precisely, and Gerard van Spaendonck at the Jardin du Roi shaped his watercolour. Draughtsman to Queen Marie-Antoinette, he worked on through the Revolution, and from 1798 the Empress Joséphine was his patron, with the plants of her garden at Malmaison as his subject. His watercolours were published as colour stipple engravings, above all in Les Liliacées and Les Roses, whose plates were framed as pictures and copied onto porcelain. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
