pierre-joseph-redoute-les-roses-rosa-cinnamomea-maialis-botanical-illustration-print
Pierre-Joseph Redouté — Les Roses: Rosa Cinnamomea Maialis | Botanical Illustration Print

One frilled, many-petalled rose in soft pink opens at the left of the sheet, with a few yellow stamens showing at its heart. Three pink buds, two clustered at the top and one half open at the upper right, sit on slender stalks. The stems are thin and red-brown, branching from a single cut stem at the base, and small, finely toothed green leaflets are spread across them in loose groups. The plate is a stipple engraving printed in colour, from Les Roses (1817–1824).

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) was a botanical painter, born in Saint-Hubert in present-day Belgium, who worked in Paris. The botanist Charles-Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle taught him to dissect and draw plants precisely, and Gerard van Spaendonck at the Jardin du Roi shaped his watercolour. Draughtsman to Queen Marie-Antoinette, he worked on through the Revolution, and from 1798 the Empress Joséphine was his patron, with the plants of her garden at Malmaison as his subject. His watercolours were published as colour stipple engravings, above all in Les Liliacées and Les Roses, whose plates were framed as pictures and copied onto porcelain. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
