From Les Roses (1817–1824), a stipple engraving printed in colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) was a botanical painter, born in Saint-Hubert in present-day Belgium, who worked in Paris. The botanist Charles-Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle taught him to dissect and draw plants precisely, and Gerard van Spaendonck at the Jardin du Roi shaped his watercolour. Draughtsman to Queen Marie-Antoinette, he worked on through the Revolution, and from 1798 the Empress Joséphine was his patron, with the plants of her garden at Malmaison as his subject. His watercolours were published as colour stipple engravings, above all in Les Liliacées and Les Roses, whose plates were framed as pictures and copied onto porcelain. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
