Slender thorned stems carry several smaller buds, from tightly closed dark red points to a partly opened pink bloom, alongside broad, deeply veined and crinkled green leaves. The flower and foliage sit isolated against a plain ivory ground, in the fine stippled detail of a hand-coloured botanical engraving.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePierre-Joseph Redoute (1759–1840) was a Belgian-born botanical illustrator who worked in Paris. He trained informally as a flower painter before the botanists Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle and René Desfontaines directed him toward scientific illustration, and Gerard van Spaendonck taught him the watercolour technique he used throughout his career, working from live specimens rather than pressed plants. Over his career he produced more than 2,100 published plates, above all of roses and lilies, prized for their exact botany and delicate colour.
