The artist's name is lettered in small capitals along the lower part of the oval.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePiet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter who moved from naturalistic landscapes to one of the most radical abstract styles of the twentieth century. Working in Paris and then Amsterdam, he co-founded the De Stijl movement in 1917 and developed Neoplasticism, a vocabulary limited to black grid lines and blocks of primary colour, as seen in his Composition series of the 1920s–30s. After emigrating to New York in 1940 he loosened the grid into the syncopated rhythm of Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942–43), now in the Museum of Modern Art.
