In the foreground two men carry a wooden plank loaded with bowls, one in a blue shirt and white apron, the other in a red jacket. At the left a bagpiper in red stands beside a man pouring from a jug, and a child in a red cap sits among stoneware jugs.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum notes that the apparent snapshot is carefully composed and, free of allegory, a realistic record of a Flemish peasants' wedding. By Flemish custom the bridegroom was not at the feast. Among the guests it names a lawyer in a mortarboard, a Franciscan monk and the lord of the manor with his dog; the porridge dishes arrive on an unhinged door.

The original: painting on oak wood, 1568; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was a Netherlandish painter and printmaker. He trained in Antwerp, likely under Pieter Coecke van Aelst, and travelled to Italy before settling first in Antwerp and later Brussels, working for merchant and court patrons. His crowded panoramas of peasant life, proverbs and biblical scenes set in contemporary Flemish landscape combine close observation of ordinary people with wit and, at times, dark allegory. His paintings are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Museo del Prado and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
