At the lower left a stout man in blue sits astride a barrel with a roast on a spit under his arm like a lance; at the lower right a thin figure in a pale habit on a red cart laden with bread thrusts out a long flat peel bearing two fish. Masked revellers, beggars on crutches, women at a well and children fill the ground between.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum describes this as an encyclopaedia of Netherlandish customs around Carnival and Lent, staged as an allegorical jousting tournament of the kind actually held in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Carnival rides a barrel with a roast on a spit as his weapon, opposed by the skinny figure of Lent with a baker's shovel and two fishes. Showing everything happening in one place at one time is Bruegel's own invention.

The original: painting on oak panel, 1559; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was a Netherlandish painter and printmaker. He trained in Antwerp, likely under Pieter Coecke van Aelst, and travelled to Italy before settling first in Antwerp and later Brussels, working for merchant and court patrons. His crowded panoramas of peasant life, proverbs and biblical scenes set in contemporary Flemish landscape combine close observation of ordinary people with wit and, at times, dark allegory. His paintings are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Museo del Prado and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
