pieter-bruegel-the-elder-the-peasant-and-the-nest-robber-fine-art-print
Pieter Bruegel the Elder — The Peasant and the Nest Robber | Fine Art Print

A stout peasant in a russet jacket and grey hose strides forward, one finger raised toward the tree at the left of the picture, a short stick in his other hand and a horn cup and sheathed knife at his belt. In the branches above, a boy in grey and red hangs upside down, reaching into a nest as a round brown shape tumbles beside him. Behind lie a pond, thatched farms and horses; a white bundle sits on the bank and an iris grows at lower left.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum says the picture is traditionally linked with a proverb about the bird's nest, though the proverb does not fully explain it. It asks whether both figures will fall, the nest robber from the tree and the peasant into the stream before him, and whether there can be a winner or a loser. It notes the few large figures of Bruegel's late work and presumes the influence of Michelangelo.

The original: painting on oak wood, 1568; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was a Netherlandish painter and printmaker. He trained in Antwerp, likely under Pieter Coecke van Aelst, and travelled to Italy before settling first in Antwerp and later Brussels, working for merchant and court patrons. His crowded panoramas of peasant life, proverbs and biblical scenes set in contemporary Flemish landscape combine close observation of ordinary people with wit and, at times, dark allegory. His paintings are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Museo del Prado and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
