Listeners sit, stand and lean in, among them women in white headcloths and a man in black with a white ruff who glances out at the viewer, while others perch in the trees at the right. A wide river valley with a distant town opens in pale light behind them.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, which holds the panel, calls it a key work in Bruegel's output. Its essay reads the crowd of nobles, priests, soldiers, burghers and peasants of many origins as a picture of togetherness rather than difference, gathered at the prophet's words as the moment draws near when the Redeemer will announce himself.

The original: oil on wood, 1566; Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525–1569) was a Netherlandish painter and printmaker. He trained in Antwerp, likely under Pieter Coecke van Aelst, and travelled to Italy before settling first in Antwerp and later Brussels, working for merchant and court patrons. His crowded panoramas of peasant life, proverbs and biblical scenes set in contemporary Flemish landscape combine close observation of ordinary people with wit and, at times, dark allegory. His paintings are held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, the Museo del Prado and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
