Born in Berchem near Antwerp, he settled in Haarlem around 1620, where his son, the landscape painter Nicolaes Berchem, was born. With Willem Claesz Heda he became one of the two principal painters of the Haarlem breakfast piece: laid tables painted in a restrained, almost monochrome palette in which light and texture carry the picture, sometimes with a skull or other reminder of mortality. Together they founded a lasting tradition of still-life painting in Haarlem.
