Below on the lilac hillside a young man in an orange robe over green and a plumed white turban looks up with a hand raised, an archer in pink standing behind him. A groom waits with a horse among trees against a gold sky. The tower is patterned in pink and blue above dark doors, framed by verse on a gold-flecked margin.

The original: a folio from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) made for Shah Tahmasp, painted in opaque watercolor, ink, silver and gold on paper, Tabriz, Iran, about 1525. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Qadimi was a Persian painter active about 1525 to 1565 in the Safavid royal workshop, one of the artists of the illustrated Shahnama made for Shah Tahmasp in Tabriz. His pages, among them Rustam cleaving a witch and Kai Kavus carried into the sky on an eagle-drawn throne, mix drama with humour and often hide the faces of people and animals in the rocks. Many are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
