quinten-massys-an-old-woman-the-ugly-duchess-fine-art-print
Quinten Massys — An Old Woman (The Ugly Duchess) | Fine Art Print

An old woman with a deeply creased face, a snub nose and a long upper lip looks up and to the side against a plain green ground. She wears a horned headdress patterned with red and blue flowers, a white veil falling to her shoulders and a gold brooch set with pearls at the centre, and a low-cut blue bodice laced over a dark front. A small red rosebud sits at the edge of her bodice just above a hand with a gold ring; her other hand rests on a stone ledge at the bottom.

Massys painted it around 1513 as one of a pair: its companion, An Old Man, to whom she offers the rosebud, is in a private collection in New York. The National Gallery reads the two as satirical portraits mocking the vanity of the old who dress and behave as if they are still young. A case of mistaken identity later earned her the nickname The Ugly Duchess, and in the Victorian era the picture, or one of its versions, inspired John Tenniel's Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865).

The original: oil on panel, about 1513; National Gallery, London.

Quinten Massys (c. 1466–1530) was a Flemish painter, the leading master in Antwerp in the early sixteenth century. Born in Leuven, he joined the Antwerp painters' guild in 1491. Alongside altarpieces and portraits he pioneered secular, satirical pictures — moneylenders, ill-matched couples and vain old age — and shared with Leonardo da Vinci a fascination with the expressive power of the human face.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
