Varma painted a series of pictures on the story of Damayanti, and this canvas of her conversing with the swan dates from 1899.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1899, Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation, Bengaluru.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRaja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was an Indian painter, born at Kilimanoor in the princely state of Travancore, now Kerala, into an aristocratic family closely tied to its royal house. Patronised by Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal, he learned watercolour from Rama Swami Naidu and oil painting from the British portraitist Theodore Jensen. He applied European realism to Hindu gods and to scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, such as Shakuntala, and won three gold medals at Chicago in 1893. From 1894 his lithographic press spread his images across India, and they shaped early Indian cinema. His paintings are held by the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery in Thiruvananthapuram and the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara, and his prints by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
