Patronised by Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal, he learned watercolour from Rama Swami Naidu and oil painting from the British portraitist Theodore Jensen. He applied European realism to Hindu gods and to scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, such as Shakuntala, and won three gold medals at Chicago in 1893. From 1894 his lithographic press spread his images across India, and they shaped early Indian cinema. His paintings are held by the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery in Thiruvananthapuram and the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara, and his prints by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
