The three-quarter turn of the head and direct gaze are unusual for a male portrait of the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRaphael painted the Florentine banker Bindo Altoviti in Rome around 1512–1515, giving him an informal, twisting pose unusual for a male sitter of the period. The portrait descended through the Altoviti family until 1808, when it passed to Ludwig I of Bavaria and entered Munich's Alte Pinakothek. Removed from Germany in 1936 amid a dispute over its attribution, it was later acquired for the Samuel H. Kress collection and given to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it remains.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRaphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries.
