Some scholars have attributed it to Giulio Romano or Giovan Francesco Penni, though its quality is often seen as Raphael's own. The same subject appeared in a textile canopy made for the bed of Pope Leo X.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on panel, c. 1517-1518; Palatine Gallery, Pitti Palace, Florence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRaphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries.
