Her gaze is lowered as she carries the blond Child on one arm; he looks out at the viewer with a hand against her chest, a pale cloth wrapped at his hips. Both wear halos drawn as thin gold lines.

X-rays by the Opificio delle Pietre Dura show an interior with a pillar, arches and a glimpse of countryside beneath the black ground, which the Uffizi thinks was painted in after completion to isolate the figures. The panel is named for Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who authorised its purchase in 1799-1800; his family kept it in the private rooms of Pitti and showed it publicly only when he was away from Florence.

The original: oil on panel, 1506-07; Palatine Gallery, Palazzo Pitti, Florence.

Raphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries. His work is held by the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi, the National Gallery, London and the Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
