raphael-madonna-in-the-meadow-fine-art-print
Raphael — Madonna in the Meadow | Fine Art Print

A woman in a red gown and blue mantle sits in a meadow, a thin halo above her braided hair, looking down at two small children. The standing Child at her knee and the kneeling boy at the left, who wears a pale grey cloth about his hips, hold a slender cross between them. Behind them a green landscape holds a town on a hill, a lake and blue hills under clouds, and poppies and low plants with red berries grow in the foreground.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum says Raphael painted the Madonna in the Meadow for the Florentine patrician and patron Taddeo Taddei and dates it 1505 or 1506. Archduke Ferdinand Karl acquired it in 1662; it is documented in the Ambras collection by 1663 and was moved to Vienna in 1773. The museum describes the group formed into a pyramid within a pasture landscape that fades to a far horizon, and calls the picture the icon of the Renaissance's new spiritual thinking.

The original: painted on poplar panel, dated 1505 or 1506; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Raphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries. His work is held by the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi, the National Gallery, London and the Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
