raphael-saint-george-and-the-dragon-fine-art-print
Raphael — Saint George and the Dragon | Fine Art Print

A knight in grey steel armour and a flying blue-green cloak rides a rearing white horse and drives a long lance into a dark, winged dragon sprawled among rocks at lower left. In the middle distance a kneeling woman in a pink dress, hands pressed together, looks on from a golden meadow. Towers show at left beyond slender trees and wooded hills under a pale sky.

One of two versions of the subject by Raphael, it belonged to a series of miniature panels painted in Florence for the court of Urbino. The saint wears a blue garter inscribed HONI, the opening of the motto of the Order of the Garter, which Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro received from Henry VII of England in 1504. The National Gallery of Art says the panel was made for the king's emissary Gilbert Talbot, not as a gift to the king himself.

The original: oil on panel, about 1506; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Raphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries. His work is held by the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi, the National Gallery, London and the Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
