raphael-the-sistine-madonna-fine-art-print
Raphael — The Sistine Madonna | Fine Art Print

Green curtains drawn back on a rod reveal the Virgin walking barefoot on clouds, a blue-grey mantle over a red dress and a golden veil, the Child held on her arm. At left a white-bearded man in a gold cope looks up at her with a hand at his chest, a crown at the lower edge beside him. At right a woman in green, yellow and blue looks down. At the foot of the picture two winged children rest their chins on folded arms and look up.

Raphael painted it for Pope Julius II's high altar in the church of San Sisto in Piacenza. A curtain is drawn open on a heavenly vision of Mary carrying the Child toward earth, their serious faces hinting at the Passion, with Saint Sixtus at left and Saint Barbara at right; the two cherubs at the bottom were added last. Dresden bought it in 1752-54, the Soviet Union took it in 1945, and it returned in 1956.

The original: oil on canvas, 1512-13; Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden.

Raphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries. His work is held by the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi, the National Gallery, London and the Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
