raphael-the-small-cowper-madonna-fine-art-print
Raphael — The Small Cowper Madonna | Fine Art Print

The Virgin, with pale golden hair and a sheer veil, sits behind a low stone parapet in a crimson dress and a blue skirt, with a green cloth beside her. The Child, standing on her lap with a foot on the blue skirt, hugs her around the neck and looks toward us, while she lowers her gaze and steadies his foot and thigh. A hill town with a domed church rises at the right, a lake and trees lie at the left, and faint halos ring both heads.

The National Gallery of Art's provenance shows the 3rd Earl Cowper buying it in Florence about 1780, after which it descended at Panshanger near Hertford until Lady Desborough, a granddaughter of the 6th Earl, sold it in 1913 to Duveen Brothers. Peter A. B. Widener bought it in 1914, and Joseph Widener's gift from his estate brought it to the National Gallery in 1942.

The original: oil on panel, c. 1505; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Raphael (1483–1520) was, with Leonardo and Michelangelo, one of the three masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries. His work is held by the Vatican Museums, the Uffizi, the National Gallery, London and the Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
