The sitter's name is not known: Vasari, who saw the painting in the Florence house of the merchant Matteo Botti, said it showed Margherita Luti, called La Fornarina, but the gown and jewels point more to a commissioned portrait of a young noblewoman. Trained in Urbino and Perugia under Perugino, he absorbed Florentine drawing in his early twenties and from 1508 worked in Rome for Julius II and Leo X, painting the Vatican Stanze and, in the School of Athens, the clearest statement the Renaissance made about its own ambitions. His portraits are direct and unhurried, his Madonnas the model that European painting copied for three centuries.
