The Ravi Varma Press issued Vasantika, a nymph of spring, as one of a set of three.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: chromolithograph, circa 1910, Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation, Bengaluru.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press was founded by the painter Raja Ravi Varma in 1894 at Ghatkopar, near Bombay, and moved in 1899 to Malavli near Lonavala. Its German printing technician, Fritz Schleicher, bought it in 1901. The press printed oleographs, colour lithographs made to resemble oil paintings, after Ravi Varma's canvases: Hindu gods and goddesses and scenes from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Puranas, sold cheaply and in thousands. Printing continued long after the painter's death in 1906, and under Schleicher the press also commissioned designs from other artists and printed commercial labels.
