rembrandt-van-rijn-the-hundred-guilder-print-etching-print
Rembrandt van Rijn — The Hundred Guilder Print | Etching Print

Christ stands at the centre in a halo of light, one hand raised, between a crowd of turbaned and capped onlookers at the left and the sick gathered in deep shadow at the right. A woman lies on straw at his feet, a figure kneels with hands joined, a man is wheeled in a barrow, and an old man leans on a stick. Mothers bring small children forward at the left, and a dog sits in the lower left corner.

The Met describes the print as weaving several episodes from chapter 19 of the Gospel of Matthew into one horizontal composition, with Christ as a luminous beacon between the lightly etched left side and the dense darkness at the right. Rembrandt kept repositioning details after the first etching, and traces remain in Christ's eyes, hands and feet. The name comes from a story, which the Met calls dubious, that he paid a hundred guilders to buy back an impression.

The original: etching, engraving and drypoint, 1648; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draughtsman working in Leiden and Amsterdam, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest artists in Western art history. He painted group portraits such as The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp (1632, Mauritshuis) and The Night Watch (1642, Rijksmuseum), alongside numerous self-portraits, including one from around 1628 also in the Rijksmuseum. Across his career he additionally produced around 300 etched plates, among them The Hundred Guilder Print (c. 1647–49); the Rijksmuseum alone holds some 1,300 impressions of his prints. His paintings and prints are held by the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis in the Netherlands, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery in London.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
