Pale lavender-blue wisteria blossoms hang in loose clusters among olive-green pinnate leaves, above a grey ink rock rendered in broad, dry brushstrokes. Two columns of black-ink inscription run down the left side of the pale beige paper, with two red seals beneath them and a further pair of faint seals at the lower right.

The original: a hanging scroll, ink and colors on paper, China, Qing dynasty, 1892, in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ren Yi (1840–1895), also known as Ren Bonian, was a painter of the Shanghai School. Born in Zhejiang, the son of a rice merchant, he arrived in Shanghai in 1857 and by 1875 was the best-known painter in the city. His bird-and-flower paintings first followed the Song dynasty practice of rich colour within outlines, and his mature work turned to looser brushwork, ink washes and greater tonal variation. He is counted with Ren Xiong, Ren Xun and Ren Yu among the Four Rens. His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
