He acted and sang at the Haymarket and Covent Garden theatres while training at the Royal Academy schools, and his first prints were of actors for John Bell's Shakespeare. The publisher Carington Bowles employed him on 'droll' prints, including caricature maps of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in the Geography Bewitched! series.
