rodolphe-bresdin-the-knight-and-death-etching-print
Rodolphe Bresdin — The Knight and Death | Etching Print

At the edge of a wooded gorge, a skeleton with a scythe sits on a carved tomb, a skull at its feet. An armoured knight on a pale horse pulls up before it, one arm raised and a lance held high, while a pale crowned figure in a long robe stands behind him on the path. Cliffs climb to a castle at the top of the plate, and in the foreground a man rows a small boat through rushing water. The whole sheet is worked in dense, wiry black lines.

The original: etching and roulette, 1866; Cleveland Museum of Art.

Rodolphe Bresdin (1822–1885) was a French printmaker who worked largely alone and in poverty, making tiny, densely worked etchings and lithographs of tangled forests, phantom cities and travellers lost in vast landscapes. The Comedy of Death (1854) and The Good Samaritan (1861) are his best-known prints. He taught the young Odilon Redon, and Baudelaire and Huysmans admired his work.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
