He probably trained under Robert Campin, entering his workshop in 1427, and became a master in the Tournai painters' guild in 1432. From 1436 he was city painter of Brussels, with commissions from Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and from foreign patrons including the Medici and the House of Este. He painted altarpieces, triptychs and portraits, noted for naturalism, warm colour and intense emotion. His Descent from the Cross is among his best-known panels. His work is held by the Museo del Prado, the Louvre and the National Gallery, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
