At the right a spiky-rayed sun with a human face looks on, and below it a smaller round face floats in the water. Rocky banks frame the scene, and a bold black line borders the woodcut. The picture is one of the Rosarium woodcuts printed in Frankfurt in 1550.

The original: woodcut in De alchimia opuscula complura veterum philosophorum, Frankfurt, 1550, Wellcome Collection, London.

The Rosarium Philosophorum (Rosary of the Philosophers) is an anonymous alchemical treatise first printed in Frankfurt in 1550, as the second part of De Alchimia Opuscula. Its twenty woodcuts tell the making of the Philosopher's Stone as the meeting, union, death and rebirth of a crowned King and Queen — Sun and Moon — in a fountain and a tomb. The series became one of the most copied sets of alchemical images, and the psychologist Carl Jung built his Psychology of the Transference (1946) on it. Copies are held by the Wellcome Collection and the Science History Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
