At his side a girl in a red cap and a rose-striped wrap walks ahead. Green and blue tiled panels line the doorway, a brass platter, blue and white vase and jug stand on the ledge at left, and a red cushioned seat rests on the tiled floor. Signed R. Ernst at lower right.

Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932) was an Austrian-born Orientalist painter who settled in Paris. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under August Eisenmenger and Anselm Feuerbach, and after a period of study in Rome turned, like several of his Viennese contemporaries, to Orientalist subjects drawn from travel, photographs and prints. His paintings of mosque interiors, harems and North African street life are built from precise architectural detail and jewel-like colour. His work is held by the Dahesh Museum of Art, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
