Two birds sit by a nest in its branches and two partridges perch on a rock at the left. Below, a saddled tan horse lowers its head to drink from a dark stream winding among sculpted fawn rocks, under a blue sky of curling white clouds. The painter, Sadiqi Bek, signed his name in tiny script on the brown rock below the bound man.

The original: a page from a Shahnama by Firdausi, opaque watercolour, gold and silver on paper, made in Iran (Qazvin or Isfahan) between 1575 and 1600; Cleveland Museum of Art.

Sadiqi Bek (1533–about 1610) was a Persian painter, poet and writer of the Safavid period, born in Tabriz into a Turkman family of soldiers. He worked at the court of Shah Ismail II, painting for his Shahnama, and from about 1587 served for some ten years as head of the royal library of Shah Abbas I. He drew with a fluid, calligraphic line, and his verse treatise Qanun al-suwar, the Canons of Painting, sets out the painter's craft.
