saint-mark-gold-ground-illuminated-manuscript-print
Saint Mark (Gold Ground) | Illuminated Manuscript Print

Saint Mark, dark-haired and bearded in a blue mantle over a violet tunic, sits barefoot on a wooden stool with a red cushion, a pen in one hand and the other on an open book resting on a lectern whose post rises from a cross-shaped stand. A wooden writing chest stands behind it. The whole scene is set on a sheet of burnished gold, with his name lettered in red near the top, inside a red frame patterned in white with heart-shaped leaves at the corners.

This portrait of the saint as author introduces his Gospel in a Greek manuscript of the late 1200s. The illuminator modelled flesh and drapery to give the figure weight, then set it against a solid gold ground, an anti-naturalistic device that isolates the saint and stresses the divine inspiration of his Gospel.

The original: a leaf from a Gospel book, painted in tempera colours, gold leaf, gold ink and ink in Constantinople in the late 13th century. It is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
