After qualifying as a teacher in 1889 he devoted himself to art, also making etchings, lithographs, watercolours and drawings of birds, exotic animals, plants and flowers, fantastical figures and self-portraits. He taught graphic arts at the school for architecture and decorative arts in Haarlem, where M. C. Escher was his pupil. In 1944 he and his wife were deported to Auschwitz and murdered.
