The museum reads the birchbark canoe as a sign that the women are probably Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), since Dakota people typically carved canoes from tree trunks. The watercolor was the basis for an illustration in Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's survey of Native nations, published in Philadelphia between 1851 and 1857.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: watercolor, 1849–55, Minneapolis Institute of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeth Eastman (1808–1875) was an American army officer and painter. Born in Brunswick, Maine, he was trained in topographical drawing at West Point, where he later taught drawing. Posted to Fort Snelling, near present-day Minneapolis, in 1830 and again from 1841 to 1848, often as its commander, he painted the daily life of the Dakota and Ojibwe people around the fort while serving there. In 1830 he married Wakaŋ Inażiŋ Wiŋ, a daughter of the Dakota leader Cloud Man; their grandson was the author Charles Eastman (Ohiyesa). From 1849 he illustrated Henry Schoolcraft's six-volume study of American Indian tribes, and in 1870 Congress commissioned him to paint seventeen army forts.
