He never sat the civil-service examinations, choosing to stay at home and care for his widowed mother, and spent a long life in poetry, painting and calligraphy. He studied the styles of earlier painters, above all the Yuan-dynasty scholar-painters, and painted landscapes, flowers, fruit and birds, including an album of Twelve Views of Tiger Hill near Suzhou. He was the leading figure of the Wu school of scholar-painters, and his pupils included Wen Zhengming.
