The museum catalogues this painting as the third of a set of three scrolls titled after the Noh play Hachinoki.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: a hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, Japan, second half of the 19th century, the third of a set of three, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eShibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was a lacquer artist, painter and print designer, born in Edo. Apprenticed at eleven to the lacquerer Koma Kansai II, he studied painting under Suzuki Nanrei of the Shijō school and in 1835 inherited the Koma workshop. He devised a way of painting with lacquer on specially treated paper so that scrolls would not flake when rolled, and used it for birds, flowers, insects and waterfalls. In 1890 he joined the new Imperial Art Committee. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrinted as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
