Around her children play: a boy in blue steadies a bare toddler at the left, and another runs with a stick tipped with pinwheels. In the foreground a baby lies on a red tasselled cushion, tugged by a child in yellow and one in blue, while two bare children clasp each other at the right. A crow stands on the floorboards. A gilt and blue frame surrounds the scene.

The original: opaque colour and gold on parchment, about 1531-32, Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Splendor Solis, the Splendour of the Sun, is an illuminated German alchemical treatise in seven parts, attributed to Salomon Trismosin, a shadowy figure said to have taught Paracelsus, whose name is probably a pseudonym. Its 22 painted images, set in ornamental borders like a book of hours, follow the alchemical death and rebirth of the king through planetary figures, a philosophical tree, a hermaphrodite, black and red suns and flasks in which birds and beasts are transformed. The earliest copy, painted on vellum in 1531–32 and linked by its museum to painters of Nuremberg and Augsburg, is in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin; a copy of 1582 is in the British Library. Watercolour copies of the London pages, painted by Edith Ibbs around 1907, are held by the Wellcome Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
