This leaf comes from the Berlin manuscript painted in 1531–32.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: opaque colour on parchment, 1531–1532, Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSplendor Solis, the Splendour of the Sun, is an illuminated German alchemical treatise in seven parts, attributed to Salomon Trismosin, a shadowy figure said to have taught Paracelsus, whose name is probably a pseudonym. Its 22 painted images, set in ornamental borders like a book of hours, follow the alchemical death and rebirth of the king through planetary figures, a philosophical tree, a hermaphrodite, black and red suns and flasks in which birds and beasts are transformed. The earliest copy, painted on vellum in 1531–32 and linked by its museum to painters of Nuremberg and Augsburg, is in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin; a copy of 1582 is in the British Library.
