Two large discs follow, one with entwined serpents round a staff and the words hot, dry, cold and moist, the other a seven-pointed star ringed with words, between a miner in a cave and a mine hut. Below, a man pours at a furnace in a laboratory while another works at a forge. Engraved by Raphael Custos.

The original: engraving, Augsburg, 1616, Wellcome Collection, London.

Stephan Michelspacher (active about 1610s–1620s) was a Tyrolean physician and Paracelsian alchemist. In 1615–16 he published at Augsburg the Cabala, Speculum Artis et Naturae in Alchymia (Mirror of Art and Nature in Alchemy), four large plates engraved by Raphael Custos that set out the stages of the alchemical work as a symbolic architecture: a mountain temple of the planets, a turning cosmic diagram, a laboratory and a Rosicrucian-tinged allegory of the philosophers' gathering. The plates are among the most elaborate images of early seventeenth-century German esotericism, and copies are held by the Wellcome Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
