He headed the library of the young Shah Tahmasp, instructed him in painting, and was one of the artists who in turn directed work on the Shah's lavishly illustrated Shahnama, begun in the 1520s. His paintings are known for their humour and close detail, lively people and animals, and rocky landscapes that rise into the margins of the page.
