Bearded elders sit on either side of a green and blue tiled terrace, one holding a closed book, while another approaches from the right; attendants with a bow and mace stand behind wooden railings. In front lies a dark pool with a gold spout. Cypresses and pink-blossomed trees rise against a gold ground, and an illuminated heading tops the text above.

The original: a folio from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) made for Shah Tahmasp, painted in opaque watercolor, ink, silver and gold on paper in Tabriz, Iran, ca. 1530-35. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Sultan Muhammad was a Persian painter at the Safavid court in Tabriz in the first half of the sixteenth century. He headed the library of the young Shah Tahmasp, instructed him in painting, and was one of the artists who in turn directed work on the Shah's lavishly illustrated Shahnama, begun in the 1520s. His paintings are known for their humour and close detail, lively people and animals, and rocky landscapes that rise into the margins of the page. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museums and the British Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
