the-crucifixion-te-igitur-page-illuminated-manuscript-print
The Crucifixion (Te Igitur Page) | Illuminated Manuscript Print

Christ, open-eyed with arms outstretched, hangs on a grey-green cross against a deep purple-brown ground, a pink cloth at his waist. The Virgin in blue and pink raises a hand to her face at the left; Saint John, holding a red book, rests his cheek on his hand at the right. Large gold capitals beside them complete the words Te igitur, the cross itself serving as the T. Dark interlace panels and bursts of gold knotwork edged in orange frame the page.

The page opens the prayers the priest recites while preparing the bread and wine of the Eucharist, which begin Te igitur (You, therefore). Linking the Eucharist to Christ's sacrifice, the illuminator turned the opening T into the cross, and painted the parchment purple, a colour long associated with imperial patronage.

The original: a leaf from a sacramentary, painted in tempera colours, gold, silver and ink, probably in Beauvais, France, in the first quarter of the 11th century. It is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
