the-tree-of-jesse-the-annunciation-the-nativity-the-annunciation-to-the-shepherds-illuminated-manuscript-print
The Tree of Jesse; The Annunciation; The Nativity; The Annunciation to the Shepherds | Illuminated Manuscript Print

Four pointed ovals on a red and blue diapered ground hold the scenes in burnished gold. Top left, Jesse sleeps as a leafy tree rises from him bearing the Virgin, with a haloed head and a dove above; top right, Mary rests in bed beside the swaddled Child, an ox and ass, and Joseph with his staff. Below, an orange-winged angel greets Mary, and another angel swoops down with a scroll to two shepherds. Prophets holding scrolls stand in gold roundels at the four corners.

The leaf comes from the Wenceslaus Psalter, made in Paris in the 1250s at a time when Parisian Gothic art had international appeal; within a generation a Bohemian nobleman, perhaps King Wenceslaus III, acquired it. Its deep reds and blues with burnished gold are, the Getty notes, typical of Parisian illumination of the period.

The original: a full-page miniature from a psalter made in Paris, France, about 1250–60, in tempera colours, gold leaf and ink; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
