The paint is laid on in fine vertical strokes that show across the colour fields.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTheo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch painter, writer and designer who founded the magazine De Stijl in 1917 and, with Piet Mondrian, led the movement it named. In the mid-1920s he tilted the grid to the diagonal in his counter-compositions, a break that ended his alliance with Mondrian. He lectured in Weimar beside the Bauhaus in 1921–22, published Dada verse under the name I. K. Bonset, and with Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Jean Arp remodelled the Café de l'Aubette in Strasbourg (1926–28).
