He studied briefly at the University of Lausanne, worked as a textile designer in Mulhouse, and on moving to Montmartre was drawn into its cafés and cabarets, mentored by the painter Adolphe Willette. He is best known for posters and lithographs of Parisian street and cabaret life, among them the poster for the Chat Noir cabaret, often featuring cats, and for socially engaged drawings made for anarchist and socialist journals.
