The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds the painting, notes that while it registers Cole's unease about industrial development, it also omits the region's Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk and Wenrohronon inhabitants, reducing the two Native figures at centre to a picturesque device.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThomas Cole (1801–1848) was an English-born American painter, largely self-taught, who founded the Hudson River School of landscape painting. He emigrated to the United States as a teenager, worked as an engraver and portraitist before turning to landscape, and settled in Catskill, New York, in 1825. He is known for allegorical cycles such as The Course of Empire (1833–36) and The Voyage of Life (1842), and for single works including The Oxbow (1836) and The Titan's Goblet (1833).
