A huge blue hat edged in a rope-like trim frames voluminous brown curls that fall to her shoulders. She wears a white gown with a ruffled neckline and a light blue sash, and one hand gathers a loop of the ribbon at her waist. Behind her, loosely brushed dark trees and a streak of gold-grey sky.

The original: oil on canvas, 1786; National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, born in Sudbury, Suffolk. After training in London he worked in Ipswich and then Bath, where he became the most fashionable portraitist of society, before moving to London in 1774; he was a founding member of the Royal Academy. His portraits set elegant sitters in feathery, loosely painted landscapes, and he painted landscapes and 'fancy pictures' of country children for his own pleasure. Rival to Joshua Reynolds, he was favoured by George III. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, Tate Britain and the Wallace Collection.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
